We had a lot of rain this past week, I suggest flash flooding may had been the cause of the delay. The Sabine River headwaters start near Mineola. East Texas is very wet.

As Electricron mentioned, serious floods and storms decimated the railroad.

Can't help but wonder if there might have been a better arrangement than bus between PGH and WAS for #'s 29 & 30 Capitol Limited due to the CSX freight derailment in DC Sunday AM. Surely, something could have been worked out to avoid moving passengers at 12M and 5AM at PGH, say at CUM, Brunswick, or Rockville.

I suspect that the "bean counters" at Amtrak saw a chance to save a train day's worth of operating expenses and crew pay by turning at Pittsburgh.

What's happening on the corridor tonight? Lots of disrupted service seems to be between Stamford and New Rochelle. Nothing on Amtrak's website.

(Ahhh...never mind...power outage reportedly near Hell Gate Bridge.)

The outage affected overhead power lines north of New York City, halting service on the railway’s Hell Gate Line, a section of track that runs from New Rochelle to Penn Station.
...
The power problems caused some trains to be delayed for more than two hours. Passengers said on Twitter that an Amtrak train that was stuck in the Bronx was towed by a rescue train to New Rochelle.

Amtrak held southbound trains at New Haven and northbound trains at Penn Station. Trains already on the move were stranded if they were in the outage area, between Penn Station and New Rochelle, N.Y.

Metro-North Railroad was not affected by the outage.
Anyone know the manner of the provision of the rescue train?

Amtrak train with 90 people aboard derails in Arkansas

No one was injured Tuesday afternoon when an Amtrak train carrying 90 people derailed in Hot Spring County, an Amtrak spokesman said.

Train 21, which travels daily from Chicago to San Antonio, was delayed at 12:30 p.m. near Perla when one set of wheels lost contact with the tracks as it approached a side track, Amtrak spokesman Marc Magliari said.

The first two cars made the switch from the main track, but the third passenger car derailed in an upright position, said Jeff DeGraff, a spokesman for Union Pacific, which owns the tracks.

Magliari said the plan is to cut away from the disabled car and reassemble the train before continuing to San Antonio. Shuttle buses will transport passengers to their final destination if that can't be completed, he said.

They sent an Empire train set and a diesel for the rescue. They weren't needed.

When will these mid-market, let alone "top-25", reporters learn that over the New Haven NY Division, timetable directions are Eastward and Westward. I knew that as a ten.year old kid. So did, I'd dare say, Messrs. Curtin, Nelligan, and Weaver

You might be correct with the directions at New Haven, but since Penn Station was not owned or ran by new Haven, they would have their directions correct there. ;)
