Does anyone know when and why 153 street was cut in half with the removal of the bridge over Mott Haven?

I am not sure if this why, but a freight train operated by CSX over the wye slammed into the bridge, damaging it. The Authority probably thought that because of usage (or lack thereof), it would be cheaper to demolish than repair it.

This dates to 1998. However, I thought the bridge was gone long before that.

Answered my own question: built in 1902, came down in 1992 due to structural problems. DOT wanted to rebuild it in 2002, but it was rejected.
