Utica area info needed

Planning my first trip to Central New York and need help on Utica area railroading. Directions to the Susquehanna yard and shops, as well as any remaining railroad stations, in use or not, would be greatly appreciated. Is Herkimer a good place to spend the night? I will have my wife, so picturesque towns with main line action would be best. Thanks in Advance!

There's a motel on Rt 5 just outside Palatine Bridge which is about 500 ft or less from the main line and at a higher elevation. Good views anyways.
