This is actually a really good idea. What's to prevent the MBTA from adding center sections to all of the existing type 7s? They could be low-floor, have doors on either side, and stairs in the front and back to connect them to the rest of the train.

This would also bump up capacity of the trains -- a 2-car set of modified type 7s would be almost as long as a current 3-car train, and could hold almost as many people.
A problem with that is it would necessitate the purchase and installation of new car lifts at maintenance facilities... Boeing LRVs, Type 7s, and Type 8s all have the same number of trucks and truck spacing for a reason!
