A few friends and I are going to make a series of trips on Septa, considering the purchase of a day pass.

Here is the intended schedule

Start Jenkintown to Center City, Transfer to the MF line out to 69TH street
Transfer to the Norristown high speed line
At Norristown transfer back to regional rail back to center sity, then back to Jenkintown.

Also going to try and ride the Cnywd dinky if time permits.

Question - Will the SEPTA day pass be valid for all the travel?

Septa web site is not very helpful

The day pass will pay for only one Regional Rail trip.

The value of a day pass is being able to use it for unlimited rides on the BSS and MFSE; Routes 100, 101, and 102; and Subway Surface lines.

If you want to ride a lot of Regional Rail, you can save money by buying a ticket through Center City; for example a Norristown to Cynwyd ticket and a Cynwyd to Jenkintown ticket.

By the way, there's only one mid day round trip to Cynwyd, so you have to plan your itinerary to catch it.

I made to trips down to Philly just to start my mileage on Septa commuter rail. If you knock out both "Hill" branches, you will save A LOT of money. Yes, you have to be careful with Cynwyd because the service is literally non-existant.

The time to go is during the Philadelphia Flower Show (March 6* through March 13). SEPTA offers a "Bouquet Pass" which is good for unlimited RRD travel, not just one trip. I think the cost is still $8.00.

The pass must be bought at a SEPTA ticket office (they might also sell them by mail--check the web site), but you don't need to buy it for a particular day--the conductor or operator or cashier will punch the date block on the pass to validate it.

The Auto Show is coming up this month, and SEPTA has offered a similar pass for the Auto Show in previous years, but I haven't seen any promo material for it this year, and SEPTA personnel, including customer service personnel, didn't have the foggiest idea what I was talking about when I asked yesterday if they were offering it this year.

*March 5 is a preview day and not open to the public--I don't know if SEPTA's pass can be used that day.

Furthermore, if you're interested in Regional Rail miles, the fare from Trenton to Center City is $7. The fare from Trenton to Thorndale is also $7, since that's SEPTA's maximum fare. Likewise, Thorndale to Downingtown or West Trenton would be no more than $7, as would a return from either of those to Wilmington. You get the drift.

Thorndale could be a great place to railfan, especially with the wide gap between the two tracks which once handled many tracks during the days of the Pennsy.

Septa is offering the Auto Show day pass this year. The only limitation is that it's not valid on trains arriving in Center City before 9:30AM. Sounds like a great way to get some serious rail mileage under your belt. http://www.septa.org/news/metro/metro_012805.html
