Other side of the conversation was probably out of range. Just because it's in range of the yard, doesn't mean you'll hear it.

It doesn't seem like it's very strictly enforced. My friends and myself have had various scanners/radios and antennas in/on our vehicles, and I know my friends have been pulled over before. Thus far, nothing except a ticket for their excessive speed (which even that isn't very readily enforced anymo...

Well, I know I'm a little late to chime in here, but a 5/8 wave antenna will work better than a 1/4 wave antenna will, though granted, they are a lot taller...if you can deal with that though, go for a 5/8 wave antenna. If you want something that's already pre-tuned and ready to roll, magnet mount a...

You could also get a roof-mount, magnetic base antenna. They are quite common at Radio Shack and such, and will stick right to the top of your car. For best reception at a decent price, I would suggest the following: 1) Purchase the following antenna from Radio Shack: http://www.radioshack.com/produ...

Yeah, that's what my grandfather was telling me...the closer, the better (less chance of a fire). The radio is rated for 8 amps, so I'll probably go with a 10 amp fuse. Didn't know that both the positive and negative leads needed to be fused though...

Ken and capecodlocoguy, First off, thanks for the responses! I've heard numerous rumors about 5/8 wave antennas versus 1/4 wave antennas, that one being one of the big ones, though I guess that clears things up. Hopefully Friday morning I can get down to Radio Shack to get some wire and a 10 amp fus...

Questions On Mobile And Base Setups...

Hello all, I’m just getting into the whole radio thing, upgrading to a Kenwood TK-760G from a Radioshack Pro-2054, as well as a Motorola GP68 for when I’m away from my car. Right now, I have a Railcom antenna (I already know about the whole “waste of money” philosophy about it, so no need to bash me...

Sorry to chime in late, but Dan is right. The 5/8 wave Railcom antenna is the best thing I've found for a roof-mount antenna (1/4 wave antennas come close, but the 5/8 wave ones I find work a bit better). Granted, you could always get a Radio Shack antenna and cut it down so it's tuned to 160-161 mh...

Sorry about the late reply... I originally met Jerry via my grandfather, back when he was running his own hobby shop in Holley, Powerline Trains. I recall operating his massive Lehigh Valley layout there before he moved to Leroy as well. It wasn't all that long ago that I dropped by his house to vis...

I'm planning on getting my masters in electrical-mechanical engineering and then getting a job at either a manufacturer or a rebuilder. I've thought about civil engineering as well, though I'm keeping my options open with the courses I'm taking in high school at the moment. Seems to me that EVERYBOD...

TAMR's 2004 National Convention, to be held in Western New York (as Erik mentioned). For more info, check out the site at: http://www.tamr.org/2004. Should be a good one this year (by the way, you don't have to be a TAMR member to attend, the general public is free to attend as well).

I railfan around Rochester, NY along CSX's Chicago Line, although I go to Buffalo whenever I get a chance (there are a few spots in Buffalo where you can see 100+ freight trains per day, so you can see why I like going the extra hour to Buffalo instead of down the road several miles). Buffalo has a ...

Hey, it just goes to show that some people need to grow up. Alot of people know I like trains and I never have any problems in my school. Just don't act embarassed by your hobbies as that is an invitation for others to come and make fun of you. Another thing you could do is make some of them underst...
