Don, From the photos I've seen all early hoppers (like 1968) were orange. All cars, cabooses, passenger cars, MOW, and locos were orange. Once you get into the 1980s, the gray cars appear. Even the passenger car was gray. Just the locos stayed orange. G&W freight cars arrived in 1962. Here is a ...

Benjamin, you should just delete your post. It's very wrong. Since your first asked asked what the G&W used to haul rock salt, I will mention that they G&W was founded in 1977 and covered hoppers existed decades before then. As to your second question, I have never seen a prototype G&W o...

Well, the hopper era is not poorly covered. There are magazine drawings out there of custom hoppers the G&W owned and tons of photos on the railcar websites of the orange cars and then later the gray cars. Before hoppers, salt was carried in bags in boxcars. There may be a photo in the G&W a...

No, not that one. My site, under Cortland County, has the coordinates: https://goo.gl/maps/EGWWWmesXen6EALS7

It's still in street view and the satellite view, but could be gone now.

Better weather is here and I made a trip out today. One update and two adds. Updated Saratoga County with photos of the Ballston Terminal Railway station in Rock City Falls (no nettles in the winter and early spring!) and added the Mt. McGregor Railroad station in Saratoga Springs. This station was ...

Back when the Delaware Otsego was running the Cooperstown & Charlotte Valley, was the enginehouse still in Milford, where it is now or was it up in Cooperstown? Thanks.

Where was the G&U engine house? The old RR with the GE and Alco, not the modern (in case the modern has their own in a new place). Google maps link would be nice. Thanks.

That's it. They owned several small Atlas AC electric locos to work the coke ovens (quenching) and in general around coal yard. There is no connecting RR (although the RWO is nearby on Franklin). Coal dock was on the Erie Canal towpath. Too bad Sanborn doesn't show any tracks in the facility. Thank ...

Where was the Syracuse Lighting Co's gas plant, circa the 1920s? I've looked at a few places and can't find a hit. I know there was a corporate building shown in postcards too. I don't want that building. Thanks.
