So it does run on Monday holidays? As far as I can see, the schedule online only mentions Friday, Saturday and Sundays..

I notice you didn't not consider kayaking or canoeing. With the Connecticut River right there, they should have certainly been on your list of transportation modes to not consider! :) Well, I did Woodsville to Haverhill Corner by Canoe in the late eighties when I was about 15, so I've already done ...

No. And that's not the point. I haven't considered taking the bus, hitchhiking, bicycling or walking either.

One thing at a time. Oh, I know, it's pure fantasy now. I was just thinking of the convenience it would bring to some of my family members in Woodsville, NH (right across the river from Wells River, VT, which would make as good a place as any for a station) to visit other family members in Hartford...

I would extend a shuttle up to WRJ, but arriving around midday or early afternoon and departing south in the early evening, and would run it WRJ-NYP. I would go one further and extend it up to St. Johnsbury, if only to provide new service to an area that doesn't have it already and open direct acce...

owns the ROW.
Ownership is probably MassDOT as MBTA owns tracks in the MBTA's commuter rail network in Eastern Massachusetts and MBCR owns no tracks anywhere.

what Jersey_Mike says about the Cardinal is true of any Chicago-east train, the daylight scenery is much better eastbound than westbound. All of them westbound have sunset somewhere in or before the mountains, even in summer, except the Lake Shore Limited, and some of them will leave their eastern ...

I witnessed the opposite happen on the eastbound California Zephyr in February of 2003. A woman who was not a passenger boarded at Reno with her sister, who was a passenger "to help her with her luggage and then look at the dining and observation cars" before it left the station, thinking ...

One more question: If she calls Amtrak, can she get a roomette assignment? She booked online and there's no roomette assigned to her. I'm not sure if any are better than others or whether she wants to be on the upper or lower level. Are there any advantages or disadvantages to either level or roomet...

Great, and thanks! She is a bit of a wine aficionado, so the tasting will be right up her alley. Her flight now arrives at 5, so she won't have much time to sightsee, which is probably just as well.

I just booked my 69 year old mother in a roomette on the Empire Builder from MSP to East Glacier, where she will meet up with my father, who has been working there all summer, after which they will drive home to suburban Boston. She's leaving at the end of September and has a few questions, which I ...

It's very sad indeed. I happened to have met the young man who was killed on a couple of occasions, as we had a couple of mutual friends and acquaintances (he used to live in Waltham). Needless to say, the friends are pretty upset by this. He seemed like a nice enough kid.

This is a perfect example of very poor planning which has created a dangerous situation. My parents live in Burlington and when Mishawum was open, I could take the train there and either walk or bike to their house and back on relatively safe secondary and back roads. Mishawum was accessible by foot...

Also it seems like MBTA equipment is not designed for as long distances as NJT or MARC equipment, considering that you can spend 2 hours on NJT(on a tranton-penn local) or 1 1/2 hours on a MARC train. Then I assume you've never ridden from BOS to Worcester or BON to Fitchburg, both runs are 90 minu...
