IMG_0136.jpg I moved to the Parkside section of Forest Hills in June of 2012. I was well aware of the history of this line, and on June 8th, to pay my respects to 50 years of inactivity on the line, walked over to the Metropolitan Ave. overpass. I snapped the above photo in the sunset (apologies as...

What Is This Object?

While walking up Ascan Ave in Forest Hills the other day, I came across this thing. It's right up against the southernmost track at the overpass, and is made of rusted metal. Was this some older LIRR hardware? As a side note, the long-needed repair/restoration of the support beam bases is underway a...

R36, I totally agree with you - it looks like they removed the embankment all the way to the edge of the stairwells to put up what is now the Rite Aid (the "photographer" or "artist" perspective is looking southeast from the corner of Continental and Austin). It also amazes me ho...

Great find with that Flickr gallery - those postcards look like it may always have been high-level platforms...

That one was determined as Floral Park a while back - Bellerose can be seen (already elevated) in the distance.

Seen at Forest Hills Station Behind Platforms

So while waiting for a westbound train this morning at Forest Hills, I happened to look down at the ground behind the platforms, and noticed these: IMG_E3916a.jpg IMG_E3917a.jpg I was trying to figure out what these could have been. Maybe a rear set of stanchions to ground level platforms long ago? ...

Ahh, the good old "red stripe" cars...

Was too young to ever have rode in one of them - wonder what that experience was like?

Re: Bay Shore High Platforms - Why So Early?

Yes I know all about the electrification projects on the other lines - I guess I had always chalked it up to wanting better/quicker entry and exit of all the ferry traffic in the summertime too, since Bay Shore has always had so much ridership based on that fact.

Bay Shore High Platforms - Why So Early?

I was looking at a timeline of stations the other day and it kind of made me wonder... Pardon me if this was elsewhere as I poked around a bit. Why was Bay Shore given high level platforms in the early 80's? Wikipedia says it was done in 1984 (I was around that station a lot with my dad as a kid, I ...

Hmm, weird - I remember trying to follow the third rails best I could (as best I could while driving along Borden anyway) and thought they followed the southernmost parts of the yard (track 1-2 perhaps) Which rush hour trains are electric? I've only ever seen bi-levels in LIC, especially at the plat...

Electrified tracks to LIC?

Been going in and out of Long Island City lately, and taking Borden Ave past the yards/station, etc... I can't help but notice though, that the tracks coming in from Hunterspoint Ave across Borden, and that go along the southern end of the LIC yard, are electrified. The third rail looks rusty though...

Unlike the cluster * created at Kew and Forest. Most LIRR trains are very heavy if not backed to the walls on the east end. If you remove all the Kew and Forest passengers from front and make the stations "Rear 4" eastbound the loading issue would resolve it self. Yes, those lazy commuter...
