Re: Amtrak Gateway Tunnels

I think that it is doable. After all, East Side Access is supposed to have 24 trains per hour on eight tracks--which is also three trains per track hour (similar to ARC's original plans). If it was up to you folks--still assuming a track connection into Penn Station--would you guys prefer the Block ...

Requiring each track to receive and dispatch 3 trains an hour is not a realistic expectation. That means 20 minutes from the time an EB train comes within sight of the outermost distant signal until that signal can be cleared for the next EB move; during that time the EB train must proceed to its t...

Build a deep cavern station under Macy's basement? That we can run NJTransit owned Turboliners into? The 6 track cavern station underneath 34th Street--not Macy's-- could work if diverging tunnels were built from near the middle of the Hudson River to the current Penn Station via the Tunnel Box/ Co...

I just wonder how deep are the support structures for the buildings in Block 780.

Remember, acquiring property and demolishing buildings in Manhattan is not cheap!

1. If property acquisition ends up being a big problem in Block 780, what are alternative ways of increasing capacity into and out of Manhattan? 2. If property acquisition ends up being a big problem in Block 780, what are alternative ways of increasing capacity into and out of Manhattan without for...

Is that train running with multi-levels?

Does anyone have any pictures of the train set?

Isn't Gateway going to the be on the same ARC alignment from Swift until the Tunnel Portals?

As for the curvature, im sure they are still using the plans for the NJ side, well since NJT had already started building the overpass for the future western portal on the nj side. It is my understand that the plans are for the Gateway Alignment to be roughly the same (as ARC's) from Swift Interloc...

The curvature in the concepts for Gateway are relics of the ARC plan which required the tunnel to go below everything at PENN as well as miss the Hudson River bulkhead. In order to get that low and still have a grade that was acceptable the tunnel had to have a longer approach. I saw a recent Gatew...

But, does that block potential future construction of the Gateway ROW (or alignment)?

There is more to developing a horizontal alignment than merely drawing a line between Point A and Point B. Amtrak's design criteria must be followed. The track design speed is the critical characteristic that determines which criteria are followed and how they are applied. Variables that need to be...

30% Design documents were submitted last week, 100% Design due in September..... This makes me assume that construction on the Concrete Casing Extension should begin by December or so. Are you asking about the vehicle clearance envelope? Or the overall interior dimensions? I am asking about both.

When Amtrak extends the Concrete Casing to the Penn Station Throat, will they have to dig up 10th Avenue in Manhattan, or can they just "underpin" 10th Avenue?

that large pile of dirt has been there for several years. My assumption was it was piled up there and left to sit so it can compact the ground it's sitting on for the future expansion to the future portal bridge replacements. Thus, one can infer that this soil will be removed soon. However, I know ...
