  • Discussion related to everything about model railroading, from layout design and planning, to reviews of related model tools and equipment. Discussion includes O, S, HO, N and Z, as well as narrow gauge topics. Also includes discussion of traditional "toy train" and "collector" topics such as Lionel, American Flyer, Marx, and others. Also includes discussion of outdoor garden railways and live steamers.

well, recently i recieved word from edaville that they didn't have plymouth cordage #5 on site. for those of you who don't have a clue on what i'm talking about, me and my dad wanted to buy her and restore her to operational condition. so, instead me and my dad are planning on building a vertical boilered steam locomotive. gauge and size have yet to be determined, but i do have the following details decided on:

1) it will be a single cylinder type powering two wheels connected by driving rods

2) the cylinder will be mounted vertically

3) the boiler will be one of my father's design. a water tight firebox in the middle of the boiler, with water around it. according to my father, who works with heating for a living, this is the most efficient arangement possible

4) the locomotive will, at this point, be oil fired, as my father has significant experience with oil-burning technology

as of right now, the only component needing design will be a reverser. i'm looking at a gauge anywhere between 7.5in and 2ft. expect her to look similar to the vertical boilered locomotive that is at the ffestiniog railway.

to give you all an idea of what "project:vertigo" will look like, follow the link:

she'll look somewhat like the leary, a vertical boilered locomotive on the ffestiniog railway.

Why not go with something a little more domestic, like "The Best Friend of Charleston?" (The first steam locomotive... well, the first locomotive, period, built in the US.)

Or, how about something more along the lines of a "Class A" Climax locomotive?

i've always been a big fan of english locomotives

well, should the plan for the steam locomotive fail, i'm looking at a potential backup. build a railcar similar to the fairbanks morse built car on the ffestiniog railway, named "busta"

i guess that a pattern has appeared for me wanting to build a replica of british locomotives then, aye?

Aye, laddie (lassie?).

Buh, why ya wanna build a motorized picnic table, then? If ye can't build your wee tea kettle (a grand idea), then why not a speeder?

well, the motorized picnic table (don't worry, i completely agree that it's a rolling picnic table) would be easier to built should my steam locomotive fail. also of note is i have everything to build it (table, motor, electrics, ect) already at my house, so that would make my job a lot easier

President Theodore Rooselvelt would approve. One of his famous quotes is something to the effect of, "Make do with what you have, where you are."

Although, I must say, I get that U2 song in my head everytime I read the header for this topic.
