How are numbers assigned for individual Metro-North train runs (e.g., 1503 = 4:12 a.m. out of New Haven to GCT, etc.)? I've searched on this and found nothing.

1500 NHV 1300 STM 1700 New Canaan 1800 Dan 1900 WBY 1400 BPT 1200 Harrison, 1503 is NHV-GCT, the last # is odd so it is heading west bound. It's the 1st train out of NHV but connects with 1303. The oddball is 1399 which departs at 0041. 1399 should be 1301, seeing that it is the 1st eastward train.

1200 series trains only go as far as CP 217 or CP 223 and are commonly called "Zipper Trains" and are only run during the rush hours.

Aren't there trains that start in New Rochelle, or Greenwich, or so? Or do they start in Stamford or Harrison and run express? Don't get the Larchmont commuters started; when I commuted from Mam'k for years, I'd hang out on the half-width platform, get some prime seats in the head car (sometimes I'd have to walk-up on an extended 11 or 12-car consist), and then listen to those in Larchmont whine!

I can't think of any trains that "start" in Greenwich. 1200 series trains originate in GCT and run either as a revenue or dead head train to either CP 217 or CP 223. An example is AM train #1010 (deadhead) that turns at CP 217 for train #1211. In the afternoon revenue train #1244 goes to CP 223 and turns for another revenue train #1275.

Some 1400 series train originate in Stamford and make express stops starting at Greenwich.

For the H&H: #800 Poughkeepsie, #700 Harmon, #400 Greystone. #900 Wassaic, #600 Southeast, #500 NWP, #300 Crestwood/Mt. Vernon West. Plus there's deadhead and weekend train which slightly differ from the weekday train #'s.

I liked commuting from Crestwood; the third track often meant a rush hour "300" train that started there was already parked there if you got there early. With the third track now completed below that I don't know if they do that anymore.

Still do.
