Those rails musta been there a LONG time, if you look closely, they are paved over at the crossing and continue on both sides.

This a common practice. The railroad closes the crossing immediately ahead of the train dropping the rail, cuts a trench to lay the rails into, immediately patches the asphalt after the rail is dropped, and reopens the crossing. When the rail crew replaces the rail the crossing is closed and rebuilt. Eliminates the need to make cuts and field welds on the new rail because of the crossing.
