I think they will try that for sure.
I also think Pan Am will be seeking abandonment of this line soon (next 10 years) and will try to pull up the rails as quickly as possible, just in spite. If not they are going to seek absurd money for the rail to stay in place, just so they can have the last laugh.

Someone posted on the Nerails site today, a few pics of MBRX901 moving the old ST 1423 that's been sitting in Greenfield for some time. Anyone know what they're up to with the unit? I can't imagine it's serviceable!

And while i'm at it - can anyone fill me in on how that unit got to reside there in the first place?

Photos are here:

Thanks in advance!

Why would you try pulling something without a mechanical inspection? Especially since your host is just chomping at the bit to find an excuse to go back to the FRA and get you evicted?

The host is the state, not Pan Am. Pan am's ownership ends at Wilton Station.

The M&B doesn't have the capability to do heavy repairs, so it must head East (if being rebuilt).

It headed East to Lyndeborough. It is currently undergoing restoration work to operable condition at the Lyndeborough quarry.

Any news on the status of the 1423?

Out of curiosity, how many rail miles did the M&B have to travel to get this loco sitting in Greenfield?

Plan seems to be to restore it to #1228 and paint it like #901. Long term goal is to get it running. Main components are still there but gaskets and electrical systems need to be replaced. They got the engine to turn over last winter. For updates check out @project_1228 on Instagram. It's run by those working on it.

Great responses and info sources.

I book marked the website which is a great way to follow progress as well as help out.

Thank you!

The website references the unit sitting in Greenfield for about 20 years. I am curious if anyone knows where it had been prior to that?

It operated for a short period of time on the M&B. Before that, it came from Guilford/B&M.
