I grew up not far from this old New Haven RR branch and this posting brought back memories of hiking along the abandoned right of way as a teenager some fifty years ago. In those days you could still occasionally find a rusty spike or rotted tie. As a historical note, a couple miles of the ancestral NH&D are still in use as the portion of Metro North's Waterbury line between Derby Junction and Ansonia. The original Naugatuck RR ran along the east side of the Naugatuck River between those points while the NH&D built the existing line along the west side. When the NH consolidated and upgraded trackage in the area in the early 20th century, the east side line was cut (part of it lasted as an industrial branch in Ansonia into the 1960s) and the former NH&D trackage became the the surviving mainline.
