I was wondering, how do the engineers on Metro North where to stop on the platform? I noticed they dont have the 6, 8, 10, 12 marker signs that the LIRR and the Subway have. Is there something in the cab signaling that tells them where exactly on the platform to stop?

there are markers, on lamp post at New Haven line stations, plus there are markers for pulling cars off.

Yea, if you look past the platform, there are markers for 1 car, and two cars off the platform. I should have gotten pictures of those yesterday =/
