Erie 4-6-0 878, a mother hubbard or camelback locomotive, was located in Avon, NY during the 1930's and used as a backup engine. It was the only engine of its type still left. Could these engines burn soft coal or did they have to maintain a supply of anthracite for it?

I think ( key word), that they could only burn anthracite, and only clum anthracite.
