Well, its been awhile, but as yesterday's(Thursday's) trip home from
Selkirk proved to be anything but dull, I thought that as things
unfolded, it would make for sopme interesting reading, so here
goes....
I was called out of the hotel, on my rest, for Q254-25, on duty at
1:20PM. We had 33 cars for Ridgefield Heights, NJ, and our power was
UP 9430(C40-8W, I believe), and GECX 2728, an ex UP(nee-SP) SD40T-2.
Anyway, account general congestion, the train never showed up in
Selkirk until about 4:30PM. We get on, and depart. First stop is
Alsen, CP-102 at about 5 :50PM. I should mention that we are
following Q162 and an S118, and they both made it to Kingston to
await two northbounds. Heres where the fun begins....
The 162 and S118 are to await the Q404 and S165. Eventually the
404 passes us. IN the interim, while he is approachiung us, Q156
pulles in behind us as does the Q100, the hottest train on the
railroad. Dispatcher decided that he will pull the 100 in behind the
156 and us, then BACK HIM OUT after the 404 passes CP-106, and run
him ahead up us and the 156. As the 404 was passing everyone at CP-
106, he goes into emergency, and now the train has to be walked.
Also, while this was transpiring, the S165, the second northbound
was ordered to stop his train as safely as possible before the wilber
bridge just south of CP-87, as there were trespassers on the bridge.
Turns out it was a possible jumper, i.e. suicide attempt, so now THAT
shuts EVERYTHING down. eventually, things get cleared up, the 165
pulls into the siding at Kingston, and the southbound parade has
begun. The 162 and S118 start south, we catch up to them at CP-90,
and now the 156 and 100 are hot on our tail. We departed CP-102 at
8:20, and FWIW, the 404 went into emergency a SECOND time at Athens,
NY(MP 115). We then pull into the siding at Teaneck at 11:20PM, let
the 156, and the 100 run around us, and we caught up to the S118 who
is going in to Bellemans at CP-5. Plan was for us to follow him in.
Well, that changed as for some reason, even there were open tracks to
recieve our 33 cars, the DS decided we would die at MP 7, 2 miles
from the finish line. The jitney eventually arrived at 1:50AM, and we
made it off at 2:30AM. Another day of fun and frolics on that single
tracked mainline we call the River Subdivision. Look for more stories
as they occur!
