Aren't they only used in revenue service on those lines if they're headed en route to/from Harmon/North White Plains anyway for maintenance, etc.?

MN can use M-8's anytime they want, without restrictions they own 36 % of M-8 fleet.

Be that as it may.. that wadn't my point :-P I'm not saying MNR can't use them elsewhere, but that because of capacity needs they simply won't be used in regular revenue service outside the NHL. You yourself have said time and time again that the NHL needs all the MUs it can get and -furthermore- that they won't be used on SLE for that very reason (among others of course).

while there may be shortage during rush hour, outside rush hour they have to many cars and need to send some out of terminal.
or sometimes you will have a train, with defect but no other H&H trains nearby to switch to.

The most likely reason for the M8's to be on the Hudson lately is because of wheel trueing. Sometimes if they don't re-enter the equipment cycle in time they will just run it as a revenue train out of Harmon.

Related to M8 on Harlem/electric Hudson lines, only in the reverse,

Can one train be made up of mixed M7's and M8's?
Can that train be run "under the wires" where power is picked up by the pantograph from the M8?

If so, why would MN & CDOT order so many M8's when the M7's cost less?

Also, are the single cars with electric pickup (third rail and pantograph's)?

thanks

the m-7 and m-8 can not be electrically coupled, just mechanical part of coupler. Power is never transfered via coupler, only control circuits.
As for M-8's CDOT/MTA barely bought enough M-8 for current service, when ordered they had 20% spare but ridership kept growing.
yes M-8 S cars have third rail shoes and pantograph, to power lights and HVAC, the car has no propulsion or dynamic brake.

BL14CG #402 took those cars from Harmon yesterday morning and was seen in Greystone at 11:45 AM.

Seems like with most of the fleet on property and able to provide adequate service, they're not in a rush to push the remaining several pairs into service.

Hearing stirrings about "odd" consists on trains 1731 and 1735 (am peak trains from New Canaan to GCT). Might be S cars in service; can anyone confirm?
