Howling trains

Can anyone tell me what causes the distinct noises the Type 8s and 01800s make when they accelerate or brake? They're somewhat different, of course, but similar enough that I'm curious as to what causes it. It's a wonderful sound I think.

It's the AC propulsion system. AC motors emit sounds of different frequencies during the acceleration and deceleration cycles.
