Opened about 1899. The Atlantic Ave. - Summer St. corner occupies site of New York & New England station. High levels about 1988.
Find a copy of Barrett's Boston's Depots and Terminals. Still probably available. Chronicles history of all Boston stations from 1830s to mid-1990s.

when was the 13 th track installed? on a track layout that i have (1994), it only shows tracks 1-12
Construction of Tracks 12 and 13 in the current layout of South Station was authorized as a part of the Old Colony service restoration which started up in September 1997. So it's between 1994 and 1997.

jees, eddiebear, you sure know your railroad history! do u have books on this stuff?
Yes I do have books, but better yet I have worked in the railroad industry since 8/23/68. Boston & Maine / Amtrak / Mass. Bay Commuter Railroad. My area is Finance and Administration. So at times, I am up close to what is happening.

I was there a couple of weeks ago for the first time in several years. Interesting to see the constuction over the tracks. That the bus station? Or??
Yes, that's the bus terminal. There's also some very expensive public parking up there too.

Unfortunately with the bus terminal being built, we lost what little city backdrop that was there for photo's. and we gained more transients with the busses from NYC
