How can I get a cab ride?

Does anyone know if the T allows anyone who is railfanning to sit upfront with the engineer in either a control cab or locomotive? Is there any permit that would need to be applied for or is it up to the discretion of the train crew?

Years ago, they not only let me ride in the cab of a Lowell Line train, but also briefly drive it and even bring it to a halt at a station stop. I'm sure this was all very illegal, and probably would not happen again today.

To answer your question, most likely no, especially in the past four years since Sept 11, 2001 and Madrid and London x2. So such rides are out.
