PA General Services Div announced today that the massive turn-of-the-century main building at Allentown State Hospital and all surrounding buildings will be demolished within the next year. The land has been earmarked for sale to a land developer from Doylestown, PA for $3,000,000 who plans on building condos, apartments, and shopping malls on the property.
This facility was built as an insane asylum in the late 1800s on a hill just above the Allentown rail yard. It was closed in 2010. Many track diagrams show a short spur at the east end of A'town yard labled as the "hospital spur". This is where coal cars were parked and transloaded onto trucks who would take the coal up the hill to the hospital.
Yet another piece of history disappears in the name of greed.
