BC and Everyone:
This elevated structure derailment interested me after noticing how the one truck on car 9339 derailed on
to the ties next to drawbar-connected car 9340 - after looking at B Division car information by numbers at
www.nycsubway.org these are R160A cars built by Alstom between 2008-2010 - 360 cars numbering 9233
to 9592 coupled into 5 car sets...Are these drawbars reasonably removable in an instance like this for the
re-railing process? The weight mentioned for one of these cars empty is 85,000 pounds - to get an idea
of how much weight is on each wheel is to divide the total weight by eight wheels on each car - just over
10,000 pounds/wheel for the R160 cars...From photos that I have seen there was not much track damage
other than the metal or fibreglass catwalk on one side that is supported by extra-length ties...It will be
interesting to find out what the cause of this mishap was in this instance...MACTRAXX
