Thanks for posting that terrific photo which brought back some fond LIRR memories. I happened to be visiting Shinnecock Hills in the summer of 1960 and caught a mail pickup on the fly. Only time I ever had the opportunity to observe an RPO in action.

Where did the westbound Montauk RPO terminate? Post mark says NY. Is that Penn Station which of course was next to the main Manhattan post office? Did the main post office have rail service? Thanks for any information.

The PSNY Mail Platform was (is) between the ladder tracks to platforms 1-4 and Yard E, directly under the post office.

How did a LIRR non-EMU RPO car move to/from Penn Station in the era after electric locomotives hauled non-EMU equipment to/from Penn Station?
