The line was closed for 2 years while the tunnel was under construction. The line was restored when the Kawasaki cars arrived, providing enough equipment to run the service.

The Ridge Spur was closed in an emergency in 1979 because of a severe equipment shortage caused by the old red cars falling apart. At one time there were 26 operational cars on the line, and trains were mixed with live and dead cars in about 9 or 10 3-car trains. the line was briefly revived in 1980, but it was closed due the construction [the tunnel went under the subway just outside the Chinatown[Vine St] station.
