I was over by the new trail they made going over the old freight spur in East Boston the other day and noticed they kept an old box car there.

It was there long before they made the trail.

Any reason for keeping it?

And any information on what the line was actually used for and when it was stopped being used?

And pictures of it?

thanks.

It could be possible that the Boxcar was bought by whomever is maintaining the trail and using it as a storage shed?

According to the plaque, it was a gift to the trail committee or whoever advocated for the trail. It just sits there to look pretty on a 10 foot section of track.

East Boston? As in between Curtis street and Wharf? According to Mr. Karr, this was built as the Eastern RR's original 1838 mainline, connecting to the city by ferry. It became a branch in 1854, was freight only for a while, taken over by the B&M in 1884, abandoned in 1905, then rebuilt years later between Revere and East Boston. It was still in use as of 1989.
Anybody know when Guilford pulled the plug for good?
