Yesterday at CUS I tried to access the internetz on my iPhone. When standing by track 8 (south concourse, mid-pack) it alerted me that there were 3-4 wireless networks available, all starting with name NRPC_____. Most of the sheep in the building likely have no idea NRPC happens to be the alter-ego of the owner, Amtrak.

NRPC owns the amtrak trademark, and no, very very few know this! Its fun telling someone you work for the NRPC. Oh what's that? Nothing just some huge nationwide carrier in the US.

Oh kinda like Amtrak?

When I think of a "huge nationwide carrier", I'm more likely to think Verizon than Amtrak. (See? Staying within the topic!)

Some passengers have been able to try out the new Wi-fi for the past week. Engadget reports wi-fi availability on the Adirondack. http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/23/amtr ... ast-regio/
we know that at least number 69, the Adirondack, has it, because we're using it right now.
There have been some complaints about GLBT sites being classified as pornography and screened out. But the only thing official from Amtrak about the wi-fi service is that it is shown as available in the new Ethan Allen/Vermonter schedule effective November 7th. http://www.amtrak.com/servlet/BlobServe ... ak_P55.pdf

I guess they are slowly rolling it out. All of the AMF1 cars i have seen are equipt with the antennas and electronics needed for the wifi service. Keep in mind WiFi service along the routes will be subject to cellular phone 3G availability.

On train 178 right now with working wifi. It was slow in philly, unbearable but once we got out its moving pretty good. They show a map on the amtrak connect website that lists all the trains its available on. Basically any train thats all Amfleet 1 consists, and is available in select cars on the Adirondack, Palmetto and Pennsylvanian trains, since they have a mix of both AMF 1 and 2 cars. I guess the official roll out of the wifi will begin at the start of November. What a great, and much needed addition to travel on the regionals though I must say!

No mention on amtrak.com (when booking tickets it still indicates that wifi is only on Acela)

The Japanese are testing the possibilities of in-train wi-fi.

Among the options for your iPhone or Droid are applications that tell you how crowded each car on the train is, ETA to destinations, delays in connecting trains, and of course, your latest comic book installments. They also advertise their cleaning solutions so that your home can be as clean as the train!

Well, your home *could* be as clean as the train in America, but I'm not sure you'd want that.
