American Flyer Smoke Unit

I have a smoke unit from a Steam 336 that doesn't have a wick.

It has a heating element and the bottom which usually has a screwed on plate is nothing but metal.

Could someone help me know how to get it to smoke properly and if they are familiar with such a type?
