You asked for a picture of an F-M engine for comparison. This is a site with a number of interesting railroad documents (inc. a history of GE locomotive development in the mid-1960s) with original illustrations. On the link "My son Matt's site," one of the links is to a scan of an F-M promotional booklet with external and cut-away illustrations.

It looks as if the engines on the flatcar have turbochargers: the F-M engines on U.S.-built locomotives all had Roots blowers, though similar engines have been turbocharged for non-rail applications.
