what is up with those? in my 17 years of using the MBTA i have never noticed them until my girlfriend pointed them out to me tonight.

why are they there?

I asked about them when I first moved to Boston and my friend from Arlington told me they went up when the Pope visited sometime in the '80s.

I don't know if this is true or not, but it is what I was told.
