Why does the red line curve right after Gallery Pl-Chinatown to Judiciary square? Is there some kind of obstacle blocking G St or was it necessary to be able to get to Union Station?

The diagonal to the southeast across Judiciary square was the path of least resistance to swing the alignment far enough south to make the curve to the north northeast into the Union Station Metrorail station. It also adds distance to reduce the grade up into Union Station to allow the tunnels to pass under Tiber Creek which is now a sewer. Tiber Creek passes over the tunnels along D Street west of New Jersey Avenue.
