Stumbled on this 2001 movie at Blockbuster.
Plot: a small group of railway maintenance men discover that because of privatization, their work habits and lives in general are thrown into disarray - long standing union agreements are thrown out the window, camaraderie is soon replaced by uncertainty and turmoil. Men used to working together now find themselves belonging to different, competing companies. Some even have to tender for their old jobs. Others decide to take the redundancy packages offered by the firm.
Very difficult to get past the thick Yorkshire accents some of the time, but very interesting slice-of-life film. Lots of up-close track working and operations as well. Really gives you an unromantic look at what the "ground troops" do and how hard that life can be.
Sometime hilarious, exposing the folly of the UK RR industry "breakup" and separation of operations and maintenance. (Let's hope it doesn't happen here, as GWB and friends would like!) Some really funny "management speak" scenes.
Here's the IMDB summary: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0279977/
