I know Tasmania has no passenger trains (one reason I did not visit the state on my visit to Oz 20 years ago). Does this article suggest the end of rail for freight, too?

It doesnt sound to good , but i doubt its the end . Hopefully the federal government will inject some $$$$ . Although distances are very short , there are consoderable bulk flows on the island .
there is also considerable political influence form the green party too i believe .

Tasmania railway was once owned by tranzrail , New Zealands rail operator , and they shipped 2nd hand locos and wagons form Nz over there , so it will be an old fleet alright .
