How is the unusual snow affecting rail activity in NZ?

the north island is fine , in the south island , the tranz alpine route is blocked . apparently thye tried to run a light engine through , but stopped when it got up to the cab doors .
anything more than a foot of snow is unusual anywhere in NZ apart form the mountains . it snowed in Wellington for the first time at sea level , and in central Auckland for the first time since 1939 .
