There are changes to the single main that reaches from Pinkerton (west of Rockwood)to Ft. Hill.
The single main goes thru Pinkerton and Shoofly tunnels, and formerly resumed two tracks just west of Shoofly. The switch was on a curve, and gave no end of trouble; most spectacularly when three auto racks were launched down in the woods some years ago.
The switch is now being moved west of the Ft. Hill underpass, on a tangent stretch of track. The tracks in Pinkerton Tunnel will be centered for clearance, and the maintainers will no longer be able to service the rails west of the tunnel thru the tunnel itself.
Also, the CPL signals on that stretch are to be replaced with NYC-style colored lights.
The switches at either end of the single main are a maintenance headache, and at least the new switch will be accessible from Ft. Hill rather than a rugged two mile drive down the grade on the former Track 1 side from Pinkerton.
