If trains are allowed to run through that station at 70 mph, I would think that pedestrian crossing is a good candidate for automatic gates.

I can't get it to load at the moment , but i'm pretty sure he's standing on the track side of a gate .

It looks to me as though he is well inside the gate, which seems to extend completely across the road. (AFAIK there are no gateless level crossings in the UK.) I suppose in the SB's mind the important thing was whether he got the shot.
