Paxman engines have all been replaced , the MTU's are downrated , so should be reliable.

It would seem lithium battery hybrid is the way most are going . I'm not sure a hydrogen powered DMU could recover regenerative battery power , the way a battery hybrid can. I doubt many pure diesel DMU's will be ordered in the future in Europe, and probably elsewhere , as most operations would be ...

I think the conductors could do with more customer service training. In NZ under the "government" railways service was terrible.they would serve you warm beer ( a cardinal sin down under) , and basically ignore you . then the services came under threat. What a transformation. They started ...

A fraction of what the taxpayer subsidizes roads and air. With respect to air, the US Department of Defense considers highways and civilian air essential to national security but does not consider passenger rail essential. Per US DOD travel policy: "The only Continental United States (CONUS) p...

No service or other mode runs at 100% load factor. An average of 100 riders means some days/sections more, some less. So you would need more than 2 bus to cover the route.
But I would agree Amtrak is very fuel in efficient. A modern Dmu would use a lot less, on par with 2 or 3 bus.

CalTrain purchased the two AEM-7s they have to test catenary, not to operate in revenue service. "We purchased them in order to test the overhead catenary system--which will be necessary even after the launch of the electrified fleet, in case of any adjustments or repairs we make to the system...

Why do you have to run an overnite all the way to the Terminal of the line ? You are looking for sections 8-12 hours long , with a reason for people to travel between . It seems crazy that there are no nite trains departing New York, for destinations in this time range. Having said that, i do think ...
