Re: Haverhill Line Upgrades (Western Route)

Doesn't look like anyone noted it here yet, but a new interlocking at the Highlands Crossover is being installed. The hand-throw trailing-point crossover will be replaced with powered universal crossovers. Not much to show for it yet, but some conduit and wiring was laid out to support it. It is bei...

Is Pan Am still upgrading the Rumford Branch to 286k? I noticed on their official weight map that the branch is still showing 263k. Back in 2015 or 2016 they were working on the bridge over the Androscoggin in Jay for the 286k upgrade. How much work is possibly left? Welp, the new weight map from O...

They must plan out the equipment rotations very far in advance then, to avoid booking bikes and then assigning a set without any cabbage car. I didn't realize it was such a tight ship. Meanwhile, Keolis is often plotting out the equipment rotation on the fly.

(ETA: Shoot, Jeff got my hopes up!)
Not every train runs with a cabbage, so where do the bikes go when two engines bookend the set?

I don't think that the film of soot is enough of a problem for the MBTA (or Keolis especially) to care, given the budget they have. I've never heard a crew call in a windshield or headlight obstructed by the soot. I think clean equipment is a good investment for PR alone, but it just isn't on the ra...

What I don't understand is the Moran Terminal has draft clearances comparable to Conley Terminal, no FAA restrictions on gantry cranes, plus a more viable rail connection to potentially two (CSX and PAR) carriers instead of just one. Why is MassPort doubling down on Conley?

Why would people in Augusta prefer to take Rt 27 north to a station in Belgrade when they could take US 202 west to a station in Winthrop? It is just as far without the back tracking. And Winthrop actually has some life to it, at least compared to Belgrade.

MA - Georgetown Branch - Bradford Rail Trail

The Bradford Rail Trail started in 2017 or 2018, I think, with the original trailhead next to the former junction with the still-active Western Route Main Line in the Bradford section of Haverhill. The other end of the rail trail is the Basiliere Bridge and Crescent Yacht Club. I'm not sure what cha...

The Stoneham Branch was converted to rail trail last year as part of the Tri-Community Greenway. The three communities referenced by the name would be Stoneham, Woburn, and Winchester. The rail-trail itself is in Stoneham and Woburn, and just reaching the active New Hampshire Main Line at Montvale J...

The second phase of the rail trail was completed last year. The rail trail is now continuous from the Lowell/Chelmsford border to just about the Concord/Sudbury border, except for a segment near Rt 2. That area will be linked up once MassDOT builds a bridge over Rt 2. I'm not sure where Phase 3 is a...

The state has funded rail trail extensions in Swampscott and Salem for both ends of the Marblehead Rail Trail. As of a month ago, I still had not seen any work started on the Swampscott Branch section, but I believe the newly funded segment will extend the trail from Beach Bluff Rd near the Marblehe...

Would CP have the legal option to end the Rockland Branch lease that was originally negotiated between CMQ and the State of Maine? My assumption is that CP would want to dump that as soon as legally possible, which would be the next lease negotiation, and no sooner.

The Saugus Branch will have pavement the full length within a year. Everett and Malden have been done for some time. Lynn is wrapping up paving that has been going on for the past month. Saugus is starting paving. Revere is not expected to be complete until next year. The extension beyond the Wellin...
