The DL&W never ran west of Buffalo, NY. It was the Erie Lackawanna ex-Erie route that ran through Ohio, Indiana, to Chicago. Missing sections of DL&W mainline include Vestal, NY to at least Elmira, NY (much of the DL&W RoW is Rte 17 now). I'm not sure how much DL&W track remains betw...

Wouldn't a relative simple, inexpensive, perhaps temporary, solution be to extend the T's existing Middleboro service ~7 miles over CSX to a station/good sized parking that could be built at the intersections of Rte 140 and 24?

GRS = Guilford Rail Systems, a regional freight RR running from CSX/CP/NS connections in the Schenectady area through MA (including Haverhill) to points in Maine. They operate a rare mix of eclectic EMDs: SD26s, hi nose SD45s, wide cab GP40s, GP7s, and standard hi/low nose GP35s/40s, all painted a d...

I started reading this word by word account between judges and lawyers and bailed out when they started talking about writ of mandamus and donees. Can somebody give a Cliff's Notes version of this? This has to do with the Rahway Valley?

I'm only a fan but I don't miss Conrail. Clearly mid-Atlantic railroading needed some rationalization in the Penn Central era as there was just too much track for too little traffic. But EL's Southern Tier certainly got the short end of the Conrail stick. D&H/GRS were never able to mount much si...

Two questions re: trackwork activities

1. A salvage company is wrapping up the collection of old rail and not so old ties on what was left of the B&A's Milford branch southwest of Framingham. Does anybody know where this material is being taken/ I suspect the rail probably has little value other than to a museum but many of the ties ...

I believe Edaville in Carver, MA is closed but North Conway, NH, home of the Conway Scenic RR, isn't too far from Haverhill. If it's a "museum fleet" of locomotives you're after there's the enitre Guilford roster and GRS runs through Haverhill. And the MBTA operates rehabbed PCC cars on th...

But what if the Bruins make it the Stanley Cup finals?

Won't game 7 happen around the end of July?

;-)

I do think it ironic that our own junior senator of 22 years (has he ever had a real job?) is going to bring north side commuting to a standstill. Good fodder for a Bush campaign ad.

Fitchburg Single Track question

After I posted my question, I checked "Trackside Around Boston 1942-1962 with Lawson Hill" and found a handful of pictures showing an impressive station in Waltham with three tracks. One picture, taken in 1955, captures the NYC New England States detouring through Waltham due to hurricane ...

Fitchburg Route single track question

by johnpbarlow ¦  Sat Mar 27, 2004 4:58 pm ¦  Forum: Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) ¦  Topic: Fitchburg Route single track question ¦  Replies: 3 ¦  Views: 3236

Why is the Fitchburg route single tracked for ~ 1 mile in Waltham? Isn't the rest of the route between S. Acton and N. Station double tracked? Has this stretch always been single tracked? Seems like a bit of bottleneck, potentially.
