Re: SouthCoast Rail Discussion Thread

Well, I've seen that this route is funded, but somehow I'm still not believing it's gonna get built. There have been so many obstacles for so long (I mean, I helped do the original vibration analysis 17 years ago) that I still can't believe anything is going to happen with this. I'm guessing they'll...

Glad they finally got Wachusett station up; I'm sure it will be well used. I did a sound
study for the layover facility in Westminster a few years ago. Hope it doesn't bother the
residents much, but if they start idling at 3 A.M. in the winter, I think some people won't like it.

Yes, that the option they chose. At least they finally chose something.

Certainly makes sense to add trains from Springfield
to Brattleboro once the new CT CR service is started.
That might free up some of the Amtrak New Haven
shuttles for use further north.

In all fairness, the Asheville corridor simply does not have the kind of ridership potential needed
to justify the expense of upgrading the line. Rail needs a relatively high population density
to make it worthwhile, and only the string of cities from Raleigh to Atlanta can make it
worth the expense.

Well, they have to do it if they want CR service. The next thing of course, will be negotiating the amount the town would have to pay to get CR down there. Given that there is already existing track and stations, there should be some way to do it. My thinking is they could do it on the cheap by runn...

Yes. Because the Palmer backup and the deteriorating ride quality on NECR to Northfield is just that big a turd in the punchbowl. That is no-joke exactly the reason. Riders hate that part of the trip with malice, and say so loud and often. You don't have to agree with them, but popular opinion has ...

In Westminster, the issue was locomotive idling. The T likes to crank 'em up early and let 'em warm up for a while for a half hour or an hour at like, 4 and 5 in the morning. The low frequency sound (gloong! gloong! gloong!) carries over a considerable distance, and is quite annoying. When there is ...

Need to have a closer look at the abutters.
Some may have legitimate concerns. When I
looked at the Westminster layover station,
some issues were legitimate too. We'll see.

Yes, I'd say all of the remarks on that thread are pretty accurate. Remember, however, that the Cape Flyer was implemented for low budget in a similar situation; there were existing stations and good/fair tracks, they just needed to put trains on and run them. There is an existing station at Woonsoc...

Might actually be a few more trains at Worcester too in a few years. http://www.telegram.com/article/20141122/NEWS/311229841/0" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; Hard to say how serious this is; CR on the P & W was looked at a while ago, but never implemented. Wouldn't cost...

From what I read, mostly here, Keolis is not making much on this contract. If they keep being fined $800K/mo, they will essentially make nothing. Course if they are that bad they won't make it through the contract. One of the reasons they got rid of MBCR was due to a long period of bad service. If ...

People have to recognize something about private CR operation; making money is entirely due to cost cutting. There is no way to make a profit by running more trains, and there's only slight incentive to make money by running them on time (over time, people will simply stop riding, leading to fare lo...

As far as I can tell, Keolis was brought in mostly on the strength of how they ran VRE in Virginia, which apparently was adequate. It's expected there will be issues while they make the transition; I remember right after it happened the Fitchburg line was a total mess, with trains routinely 20 minut...

Well, that was quite a rant! Overall, however, I'd say DMUs are unlikely to get out to Foxboro. The problem with that location is that they need the NEC and Franklin line trains to go all the way out; any service at Foxboro would (likely) terminate there. They can't afford to send any peak hour trai...
