Seems like the cab car might've made sense for Brightline vs two 4400 hp locomotives for 4 coaches! In any case, I think that's probably a preview of what will eventually replace the Budd Metroliner cab cars. Brightline equipped its trainsets with two locomotives for a couple reasons: 1) Reliabilit...

That arrangement seems to work out fairly well for the Talgos.

1.) There is no dilusion of service, especially since West Station to the Seaport is also a concept included in the plans (you don’t really think a red line test track is the end goal for track 61 do you?). Plus, there’s another driving factor which is the overcrowding of South Station, which your ...

Maybe in some politicians' dreams. But for the rest of us here in reality, it's unlikely to ever happen. Shaving a few minutes off a small percentage of commuters' trips vs transferring to the red line is not worth diluting service between the two terminals for everyone else (Kendall is only one emp...

Service is running, albeit with numerous delays. Apparently there was a signal problem around midday that shut down all service out of South Station, and the north side lines are running up to an hour behind schedule.

Not surprised they're bypassing Aquarium. Atlantic Ave is underwater and I've read that BFD has been rescuing people from Long Wharf and the Aquarium by boat

The new platform is only 1000 ft away from the old platform. Hardly a significant move at all. And it's just as far from Essex St as the old platform, just via Union St instead of Amesbury/Parker, while being closer to all the old mills undergoing redevelopment and having a parking garage (which is ...

The idea of sending some Worcester trains to North Station via the Grand Junction is discussed now and then, but unlikely to ever happen, for good reason. I'm not sure if any revenue passenger trains ever used the GJ in the past, but they certainly haven't in the MBTA era. The currently dormant Urba...

The track you are referring to is the Grand Junction Branch and it is definitely in service, used pretty much daily by both CSX and Keolis.

I thought the plan was to use the existing SLE fleet? None of those cars are ex-MBTA as far as I'm aware. Wikipedia lists the Mafersa coaches as being ex-VRE, and the Shoreliners have never run in Boston.

The reason more transloading isn't/wasn't done between modes like you suggest is largely due to cost for freight. Every time you have to pay someone to unload a railcar and load a ship, and vice-versa, is extra money spent, which drives up the cost of shipping significantly versus just leaving it on...

"Track problem" currently requiring busing between Wellington and Community College.

Given this cold, I'd guess broken rail?

It's been proven elsewhere that the best builder of ridership is convenience [frequent service], not fast trains. The route needs another frequency earlier in the day out of Boston. Discussed here frequently in the past. Check out the Service Development Plan, specifically page 34... http://www.nne...

re: Trackage ownership Can someone point me to a citation as to ownership of the trackage in question? I know an ex-Hill staffer who helped write the Staggers Act, and at dinner yesterday, he was sure it's BNSF. The WA State Rail Ownership Map is a bit dated (2011) but indicates the line as being o...

The Cascades service, and the Adirondack are Amtrak T&E,OBS crews, with NO stops between the border and the terminal station in Canada. Not entirely true. The Adirondack stops in St-Lambert before it gets to Montreal. (not for much longer though - the train will begin skipping this stop once the ...
