Re: "Pocket Track" at Summit

$25 million seems like an awful lot of money to spend on a station that is otherwise functional and in good shape (my opinion, of course). I would have put that money toward Maplewood station--that station needs some help. The platforms in Summit seem like they're relatively new, and look like they ...

Another day, another delay. Trains into/out of Penn Station New York are subject to delays up to 30 minutes due to Amtrak overhead power problems. NJT rail passes/tickets will be cross-honored with NJT and private carrier buses, PATH at 33rd, Hoboken, Newark and NY Waterway in South Ferry at Hoboken...

Is the $25 million for Summit Station in the 2016 Capital Budget a reference to the Pocket Track work, or is this part of some station improvements?

112 years old! Wow. I knew it was old, but 112 is OLD. It's actually older than Portal Bridge. I'll agree that it does look like it's in good shape. It is a nice looking bridge. Too bad it doesn't have a third track on the second level. I guess they'd never imagine back in 1903 it would be needed on...

I think today is the perfect example of how effective a strong commuter voice (and the ridiculous delays that prompt the angered tones) is to getting rail transportation improvements funded. Even the New York Times ran an article about the delays. Interestingly, you won't find anything on NJ.com's &...

The delays have been so bad, the New York Times ran a feature about it today. Quotes from the article: For the third day in a row, electrical problems in century-old rail tunnels under the Hudson River on Wednesday stymied the commutes of tens of thousands of New Jersey Transit riders, illustrating ...

Wow! So much information in that PDF of the State Rail Plan. Thank you for posting. And so many dreams yet to be realized, haha. Thank you all for your replies. Well, it's good to hear that NJT at least recognizes that a third track between Summit and Millburn is needed. I've got 25+ years left of w...

M&E Capacity Improvements (Dreams, Not Reality)

It's been well documented that NJ Transit has capacity issues at Portal Bridge and the North River tunnels. The pocket track project near Summit station got me thinking... what other capacity improvements could NJT make that would make my commute, as an M&E line traveler, a dreamy breeze? So, I ...

Did anyone go the Morris Avenue bridge meeting on Wednesday? Just wondering if NJT mentioned anything about the pocket track project, since they'll likely conflict if done at the same time.

Thank you, all. Very helpful. Asbury Park Press posted a database of NJT employee salaries, and I have to say they were a lot lower than I would have guessed. And if it's true that NJT is getting a deal by screwing their engineers the prevailing wage, well that is just sad. Hopefully a strike can be...

I understand that the unions are working without a contract, and that is an issue. But, what terms are they not coming to an agreement with? Is it pay, healthcare, benefits, hours, or all of the above and more? If 100% of the engineers voted yes to a strike, it has to be a considerable issue. But I ...

Thinking about this more, the primary issue may be the platform dwell time to reverse the train into the yard, no? So, if a Summit WB local needs to turn around, they currently do that on the wall track. But that may not be the best area to turn the train. Especially if it would be advantageous for ...

If the pocket track and new interlocking is indeed down there, it'll become its own new interlocking. NJ Transit's website specifically says "relocate the West Summit interlocking." For what that is worth. :) I don't understand the significance of this new pocket track. Why can't they use...
