Re: Amtrak and Indianapolis

This is a relevant line from the Trains article on Chicago Hub improvements: >Additionally, the Cardinal could potentially ditch its circuitously problematic Chicago exit and entrance by utilizing a future CSX connection at Dyer, Ind., with the South Shore’s West Lake Corridor Project now under con...

METRA has absolutely no experience with modern 60 Hz electric computer operation. It may be their experience with the many substations, heavy conductors, and DC traction motors has soured it on any expansion to other routes. NICTD South Shore has converted to AC traction motors. It doesn't take rew...

Last I heard, Illinois still has an ~80% reliance on natural gas and nuclear. Wind and solar are around 10% of the state's generating capacity. Coal, biomass and waste oil make up the remainder. So let's stop the public lie here and now.... There will still be a significant percentage of greenhouse...

All this does is move the emissions somewhere else, or rely on nuclear power which will always have its own special legacy.
Solar, wind, hydroelectric. Welcome to 2023 (1880 for hydroelectric).

If the zone changes are part of the plan most riders will still win.

"A Monthly Pass would be priced at 20 times the cost of a One-Way Ticket: $75 for Zone 2, $110 for Zone 3 and $135 for Zone 4."

I'm tired of this mentality that just because ridership hasn't recovered to exactly 100% we need to make the system even worse. They need to adapt and learn. Metra has done this by recognizing and starting to switch over to a regional rail model. There are days where I am glad that the South Shore ...

Looks like the log jam cleared. 59(19) departed 1hr 32m late. 30(19) departed 2hr 54m late and made it to Elkhart 2h 57m late. 50(19) remains canceled (but I believe that was due to CSX track work). 48(19) departed 1hr 51m late. The air line bridge has been out of service in Chicago for several year...

Issues with the bridge south of the station. Has anything left?

Maybe the restriction was dropped.... Naperville, Homewood and Glenview are all bookable from CUS. So is Hammond. I'm not wasting the time to see if it can be ticketed. I checked before I made my post. The last published timetables showed the restrictions as noted on the other destinations. Glenvie...

I don't think anything stops somebody from buying a ticket from Chicago to Glenview on the Hiawatha. This should be no different There was a time when Amtrak would not sell such a trip without a connecting train at Union Station. It was a note in the public timetables. Homewood to/from Chicago. Ham...

So are you thinking the train will pick up and drop passengers west of Elgin and not accept inbound passengers from Elgin to Chicago (or allow outbound passengers off before the train is past Elgin? That reminds me of the South Shore service, except the South Shore owns and operates their own trains...

During the pandemic the South Shore only required tickets in one direction. You probably rode during the extended one way ticketing.

They are still running a "two months for the price of one" deal on monthly tickets.

Creating new ones? They would not last long.

It is not as simple as passing over a passenger car (with passengers aboard) to a freight railroad and saying "you MUST deliver this car to the prescribed destination" demanding on time priority service on a specific route. If it were, the common carrier obligation could be used for all pa...

The combination of wear and damage to the railroad track, had it been noticed by BNSF Railway inspectors, should have led to the track being replaced before the derailment occurred, the National Transportation Safety Board found. Investigators also found that a train inspector’s workload likely pre...
