My apologies to member "hxa", who DID post a rulebook in its entirely. I missed that, looks like we're over 70 replies so far. Therein, Rule 51 on Page 43 does allow for pushing a disabled train, as quoted here by "justalurker66". The intent was to help people who did not want t...

Number one job of the NTSB is to determine the facts. Not assumptions. Not claims made to the media. If it can be proven that the radio was actually out of service or unusable due to the environment that will be a factor in the incident. Were the operating rules sufficient to prevent the collision o...

It sounds like control gave the disabled train the track all the way to 96th St and expected the train to stop there while the in service train passed through. 20-20 hindsight they could have stopped all northbound moves at 96th St "just in case" the disabled train ran the signals. It is a...

Does anybody have access to the rulebook which would apply here? There's an old version of the rulebook: http://thehasbeen.org:9090/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/NYC-MTA-RULESREGSOCRd.pdf Specific rule (#51) - 1998 version MTA-RULE51.jpg Lead cab controls the brakes, pushing cab controls the...

Would CBTC prevent an engineer in the sixth cab of a ten car train from pushing the first cars past a stop signal?

Does anyone have a GOOD answer to WHY Amtrak would spend money to move Beech Grove? The most common excuse I see is some sort of "punishment" to the state of Indiana for not paying for the Hoosier State.

The current arrangement is working.

Gotta love Chicago-size con games. Save 30 minutes? South Shore has a nearby station, the busiest on the entire line, that is 40 minutes from downtown. Are they telling us that CTA will give you a ten minute ride downtown? Because CTA is currently 31 minutes (in theory) from 95th to downtown. So th...

Shutting down Beech Grove would be expensive. As long as the Cardinal is passing nearby, they can keep the status quo and continue to use the Cardinal as the hospital train. Amtrak seems to be unwilling to invest in their routes. All maintenance and improvements are pushed off to the track owners an...

Apparently, the Board did not think that Prospect Ave was being resurfaced at the time of the incident. Such is clearly illustrated with the photo of the scene appearing on Page 2 of the Report. There was a drop of some 3" on each side of the tracks. I somehow would have thought that would be ...

Regardless of cause, crash-worthyness is a common feature in NTSB reports: "The evidence indicates that the fatal injury was sustained by the impact force of the rear of the box truck with the cab car sidewall near the passenger’s seating location, and not as a result of the ejection itself.&qu...

It is not an automatic ... at last report it is a shared control with Amtrak deciding when NICTD can control the crossing. (If you have current information please update. This is CP 10th St on the Amtrak Line, now two NICTD tracks on diamonds with the old diamond at the edge of pavement for 10th St ...

Some have said Beech Grove Shops is the only reason for the Hoosier State. Bear is also off the National Network and requires trackage rights. It was until Amtrak was required to charge the State of Indiana for the service. In the initial proposals Amtrak outlined the costs of operating the Hoosier...

Amtrak owns and ultimately controls the diamond. When the diamond is in Amtrak mode NICTD cannot clear a train across the diamond. When the diamond is in NICTD mode the South Shore trains can move. To avoid delays on their own line, Amtrak has the habit of putting the diamond in Amtrak mode and clea...

The State of Indiana continues to support NICTD including the two expansion projects in progress. They have also funded LocalTrax projects (not ...

I can certainly see the attraction of the CHIP vision - a handoff to South Shore and then an Amtrak-dispatched route on the Lakefront and Airline. So CN handing over their lines to Amtrak for dispatching (Kensington to CUS)? CSX to NICTD to CN-IC/Airline to Amtrak CUS with current ownership vs CSX ...
