Re: LIRR Mainline Third Track Project

I actually never thought of that. Eliminating all the crossings on THE MAIN LINE. The reason the Willis Avenue grade crossing on the Oyster Bay Branch was eliminated too was due to the proximity of both crossings, and the fact a steeper grade of more than 10 degrees would have been required. The rumor I heard about the Willis Ave. underpass is that it's only one lane, which I knew had to be wrong. Why would the Village of Garden City care about a defunct switch at Nassau-1 and how would they even be aware of it? How would it even affect them? Actually the switch draws ire from me becau...

At Willis Avenue, even though the road reopening is imminent they are doing some rebar work between the two bridges for a "roof." Switch installation is underway at NASSAU 1 where the future Track 2 is being connected to Track 1. Those eyesore wooden poles at Merillon Avenue are now gone, ...

1.) Finally, after wondering and wondering and wondering and...wondering when those wooden poles were going to be decommissioned at Merillon Avenue has been answered. This week the wires have been cut, and the poles cut and taken down. 2.) The Western end of Platform A at Westbury has been razed, wi...

This weekend will be marking another milestone, and major step in the project will cause the four consecutive weekend outages for Hempstead Branch customers. Starting on this weekend (July 24th-25th) Hempstead service will be suspended between Hempstead and Floral Park for switch installation as par...

There is absolutely no way that a fourth track could have been added at Mineola even without the Mineola Blvd. pier. Think of the space both West and East of the station. My prediction for Willis Avenue to reopen to traffic is sometime next month, because the trend has been that about 4-6 weeks afte...

I'm guessing that the signals, gates, and other components of the Mineola pedestrian grade crossing will be history when the new Platform B is cast to that point near the pedestal signal, or unfortunately when NASSAU has to go? :(

As of this hour, here are a few updates on the construction: 1.) The box-jacking operation of the Main Line Willis Avenue crossing has been completed, and at about 1-2 AM trains were back in service in between Hicksville and Floral Park. 2.) A building adjacent to the Second St. Oyster Bay crossing ...

LIRR allows you to subscribe to emails with outage info. Separately, as I recall, one of the underpasses going in soon or now is for pedestrians only. About two weeks ago on the June 11th-12th weekend, they installed the pedestrian underpass at the former site of the 12th Street grade crossing in N...

Somebody said that the Main Line bridge was going in first, and then on the weekend of July 10th-11th it would be the Oyster Bay Branch bridge. The article doesn't say which bridge is going to be box-jacked, much to my chagrin. There will be no train service for New Hyde Park through Westbury. Oyste...

Actually what I'm describing is that large open area where a building existed to gain access to a parking lot. Here's a photo of the building I'm talking about. mineola10smhd.jpg I forgot to mention that the new elevators at Floral Park are now in service, and further demolition of Platform A is com...

Right now as we speak, the new Twelfth Street underpass is being laid down. Unlike the grade crossing eliminations, this will see a crane lifting precast segments similar to boxes at the site. They have excavated and removed everything at the site, there is a massive gap with the tracks taken out, a...

Thank you for having photos of what is going on at Willis Avenue in between the Main Line and Oyster Bay Branches. People couldn't get a good angle within that triangle in between.
