Just occurred to me, just because the national standard is 286,000 pounds doesn't mean it must be capable everywhere. What car would these customers get that already doesn't traverse the CL already with no problem? Besides the obvious logistical problems, a weight limit clearly doesn't affect the cu...

Ok, can you show me the document, what structures and what exact mileposts?

@CoastLineRailfan Wait, it's MORE expensive? How? Ive been told hundreds of times it's cheaper by rail than by truck, (5.6 cents per ton mile by rail vs 15.6 per ton mile by truck) and I have articles that say just that. Wasn't the affordable shipping prices and the ability to cram lots of material...

@CoastLineRailfan Transit hasn't banned any engines they have from coming here because none of their engines weigh more than 263,000 pounds. Their heaviest engine is the PL42 which weighs in at 262,000 pounds. Aside from places that need door-to-door service, I can't see why these places wouldn't w...

Builders General made a deal with Conrail to have their rail deliveries go to Freehold and move them from Freehold to Little Silver and Toms River by truck. Part of the deal was Conrail was to defray part of the cost of trucking. NJT was very happy with the deal as it eliminated the last Conrail cu...

In line with the recent discussion on Coast Line freight, I'd like to give my two cents. I can't say why Conrail stopped serving Builders General in Little Silver, as that place is fairly large and always busy. There's a siding long enough for 3 centerbeams or 3 boxcars. Asbury Park Press moved to ...

@NY&LB Do you have any coordinates on that bridge you were talking about? @RailsEast Was C&D actually going to buy it were they restrained by the stuff Bracdude said? Again, I believe going from Amboy to Jamesburg and then to Farmingdale via the Freehold route would take care of the Plate F...

I actually heard that's why they stopped bringing cars to Builders General in Toms River. NOPE The wooden bridge just to the west of the GSP in Toms River (gone now but where it was is still clearly visible) was in bad shape and could no longer support a train. Too expensive to repair for one custo...

@Coast Line Railfan @RailsEast So it's Jersey's government's hostile environment to businesses that drives away rail customers, not really Conrail itself? Who would've known. Also, what "pending sale" are you talking about? Do we have any legal documents/further information on that one? A...

Fwiw, the Poly One plant was one of my customers back in the day. The reason they stopped receiving plastic pellet covered hoppers was that the head office decided to close the plant and shift operations to Texas. If they were still in operation here they would still receive cars. Chris Besides Con...

The Southern Secondary is the only physical connection between Earle NWS and the national rail network. I would think that strategic value alone might be enough to keep it safe from abandonment. That is very true, but if push comes to shove I don't think the Navy would be willing to take the reigns...

@CR7876 The reason why there's no rail markings on 571 was because the truck never put its rail wheels down. He lined up the truck with the tracks and was gonna attempt to go south towards Lakehurst, but decided not to attempt it after looking at the track conditions. As for the Southern being in d...

... This next part is optional, but a wye in Farmingdale and rebuilding the siding just south of Marl Rd should be considered. The wye would allow trains to go in either direction without having to move engines to either end of the train, while the siding would allow for MOW trains and equipment to...

Upgrading track speed is more difficult than just ties and ballast. The problem is low rail joints. After the same rail being in place for 60+ years, and the weight of engines and cars all that time, the rail bows, with the low points at the ends on stick rail. This tends to make cars rock, which c...
