Re: NJT restricting access to onboard restrooms?

Most likely the number of crew available to run trains was too low to crew the whole train due to COVID. (They have to have a certain number of conductors + assistant conductors per car open.) The decision to block off the first two cars instead of the last two is very strange - my hypothesis is thi...

"slight modifications to the step structure"

Ah, so that's the problem. The stairs on the Tri-Rail cars must be colliding with something.

The 9/8/2019 schedule says "Until further notice, Hoboken-bound passengers may travel via Secaucus at the normal Hoboken fare by presenting their Hoboken ticket/pass to the faregate attendant." Is this still in effect? I can't find a newer version of the full paper schedule (r0070.pdf) onl...

You're asking someone who posted 10 years ago to share pics - and necroposting in every SIRT thread at once. These aren't active conversations.

There are two big issues here: 1. Demand patterns - There are a lot of sprawling suburban residential neighborhoods, but it's hard to find walkable employment centers with the same job density as Bethesda and Silver Spring. DC has a ton of (government and government-adjacent) jobs in suburban busine...

The point of a subway diagram is not to show you geography. It is to show you how to navigate *within* the system. Compare London, Paris, Moscow, Tokyo Metro, etc... Trying to pack both geography and service patterns into one map just does a shoddy job of communicating either. How many tourists hav...

I still prefer the use of cash. Why?? In the past 3 months a bank card that I use to buy gas at the same gas station every week and to pay my cell phone bill has been hacked twice. Sorry kids cash cant be hacked. I will keep writing checks for all my bills and cashing a check for walking around mon...

Sound is a wave. Sound cancellation is applying the inverse wave to cancel the sound. (They've talked about using this technology on automobiles as using less energy than a muffler). Then it would matter less the order of the train cars. There's no way to perfectly cancel out a sound besides not ma...

The new in-system passageway from Times Square shuttle platforms to Bryant Park IND Sixth Ave platforms also opened.

It has no elevators to speak of, which is a blessing for the moderators, though of course it's disgraceful that the Bryant Park station hasn't yet been made accessible.

I'd like to thank you for posting anyhow, despite the fuss. Very excited to see the new platforms opening tomorrow! (I'll be sure to take the elevators at Grand Central!)

The issue with the Boeing LRV was more Boeing than standardization. San Francisco now operates standardized rolling stock (the Siemens S200 is just a high-floor S70), and Boston is planning to buy off-the-shelf for the upcoming Type 10 order. Boston and standardized, off-the-shelf don't go together...

So much for "This note is legal tender for all debts, public and private", then. The Supreme Court has ruled that Amtrak is a government agency, yet this government agency doesn't even accept the government's own bills. The difference is between accepting repayment for a debt and entering...

Agreed that every station in regular operation should be visited with either arrival or departure by train. Taking buses (or other public transport besides the relevant metro rail network) is fair game according to London rules (the ones tracked by Guinness) so long as either arrival or departure is...
