Could this be the key to the end of grain elevators and grain trains? I highly doubt it. Look at how you'd have to handle that, compared to the existing hoppers. You'd have to take it off the car, dump it, and put it back on the car. Too inefficient! It's much faster to continue using the existing ...
If borate nitrate is environmentally friendly, it's the first time I've heard of it.
All of the older GM's that CN has running around (up to the SD75's) have two starter motors in series... 32 volt suckers. The newer SD70M-2's went back to an air starter, and it's been problematic... I hate the SD70M-2's with a passion.
The company does not care about the needs/wants/desires of the employee/family. Truer words have ne'er been spoken.... The company only cares about the bottom line. If the employee doesn't make it (or chooses family over the job.. as any smart person really would...), then they'll just hire another...
Why are large diesels set to drop their collant? If that feature was designed in in regard to engines that do not have anti-freeze, perhaps that valve could be removed or by-passed. It seems wasteful to have ongoing fuel consumption, whether the engine's work is useful or not. They dump the water b...
When the BF is open, the main contacts show voltage. When the relay kicks in that voltage disappears. I am puzzled. Are you measuring this across the two contacts on the BF? If so, that makes perfect sense. Open, there's a voltage differential. Closed, the voltage is the same and you will not read ...
I did my apprenticeship with CN. I have no ticket, no official qualification whatsoever. I could only go and get another job with another railway. Diesel electric locomotives are pretty specialized. While the background could lend itself to other fields, there's not much other than the basics that a...
The BCOL units I've load tested were all rated to 4400 horsies.. so I'd say it was done.
I can't speak for Europe.. but over here in North America, if it's on a highway, it's not likely a locomotive. They tend to stick to those rails... at least, most of the time ;) The bulb used in the ditch lights is exactly the same bulb used in the headlights... so I can't see how you see a differen...
At our shop.. most of the engines are left outside running when it's cold. Crews will usually shut them down and pull the battery switches if the temperature is above freezing. All of the newer units (road power) and most of the yard engines have some form of Auto Engine Start/Stop system, including...
Happened back in 2007... made its rounds many times since then.
Bad day for CP today...! The derailment in Ontario, and now this.. http://www.ctvbc.ctv.ca/servlet/an/local/CTVNews/20110126/bc_mission_train_crash_110126/20110126?hub=BritishColumbiaHome http://www.abbotsfordtimes.com/news/Accident+Train+truck+collide+Ruskin/4174561/story.html Pics in the first link.
I'd suspect there are doors on the rear of the cab both sides, like some of the CN SD40's I see running around.
Wow, that's a lousy looking installation job! Neat concept, but I would expect they'll see all sorts of reliability issues from the poor quality of the install.
