There may be other limitations - but that was cited as one of the main reasons they upped the HEP capacity of the new locos.

The ALC42's have 200KW more head end power than the Genesis units. One reason for this is Amtrak was interested in increasing the max number of passenger cars for the Auto Train.

The time for that has come and gone. Amtrak has ordered 125 new Siemens ALC 42 passenger locomotives and #50 is about to be released. And another bunch has been ordered as part of the “Airo trainsets.” Basically the Genesis units all have replacements in the pipeline. There’s no going back at this p...

Where on the Amtrak national system outside of the NEC or other Amtrak-owned lines do trains operate at 125MPH? Nowhere that I am aware of... max passenger speeds usually top out at maybe 90mph, and in most places less than that. Well I was talking about leasing freight units - not Amtrak ordering ...

A lot of people that aren't fans of the Siemens engines advocate for that. The problem is freight engines aren't designed for the higher passenger speeds. So you're sacrificing the ability to operate at speeds greater than 70MPH (and adding time to the schedule on some routes) for the benefit of get...

I see no evidence that either CSX or MASSDoT seek to reduce freight activity east of Worcester on the Framingham line - in fact, their effort is just the opposite: interchange traffic is building on G&U at N Grafton, and at Middleboro for Mass Coastal, C&D traffic is building on CSX operate...

Sounds more like making excuses for railroads poor operating practices. Talk of multitudes of trains while ignoring they are spread out over 100's of miles. And that is what theyre supposed to be doing. The railroads are owned by stockholders. Those stockholders are often institutional investors. T...

Is there something about allocation of costs and income that would make the passes problematic for WI even though they are net positive for Amtrak? It means more costs for WIDOT. With PRIIA 209 service Amtrak will do whatever the state wants and would charge $1 fares if WIDOT asked - but WIDOT woul...

Is this FY23 money? Proposed FY24 money? Remember, the 218 aren’t necessarily friendly to any government spending. Multi-year funding? Don’t believe this until one of the recipient agencies signs a contract. It's FY22 and FY23 money which were simultaneously awarded in this funding opportunity. The...

I think times have been changing as well as politics and Amtrak and some of the freight roads have realized it’s in both their interests to try to move on from the adversarial relationships and instead be cooperative. There is no reason why both cannot coexist. Passenger rail has also become more bi...

(Cue the assertion that airports and interstates are propped up at the expense of rail and not by user fees and fuel taxes...) Sent from my SM-S911U using Tapatalk The age old argument between passenger rail advocates and critics. The truth of course is in the middle of the arguments usually made b...

Long Distance Fleet Replacement

Today Amtrak posted an RFP on its Procurement Portal for replacement of the bi level Superliner Long Distance fleet. Nothing yet on the single level fleet. Will probably be more information next week and perhaps a press release.

And on top of the successful CRISI grant we’re now admitted into Corridor ID. Mass DOT got in for “Boston and Albany Corridor” and CTDOT got in for “Hartford Line Corridor.”

Here is the full list of national network projects for this year CRISI FY22 National network projects (Previously announced): CHSRA - Six Grade Separations in the City of Shafter Project (Up to $201,946,942) Capitol Corridor Joint Powers Authority - Sacramento to Roseville Third Track – Phase 1 Proj...

The agreements may differ with different carriers too. There's definitely a performance incentive program with BNSF and their internal policy lately seems to be to keep Amtrak moving so they can cash in on the performance incentives offered by Amtrak to the extent possible. This is really interesti...
